Supergroms 1st Contest 2010/11
24th October 2010 ( 2010 / 2011 Summer Series )
Despite the variable looking surf forecast and a overcast and swelless start we ended up having a beautiful sun filled day with plenty of fantastic 2-3 foot onshore waves for our Supergroms to rip up!
Crunchie Point at Point Leo was our venue for this event. It was a great way to kick off our first contest of the summer series. The level of surfing and numbers in all divisions was excellent.
We kicked off with the Under 10 Boys. The Under 10 Boys who surfed out the back were loving the conditions. Archer Lloyd surfed very well beating Marlon Harrison and Charlie Lucas. The Under 10 Boys Inside saw Joe Everist (son of Andrew) rip up the division in his first contest with Jamie Clemie and Ziggy Strauss hot on his heals. Well done boys!
Under 10 Girls out the back loving the crowdless conditions and rising tide got some great waves and high scores. Piper, Brynee and Bella all getting some great waves. The Under 10 girls inside saw a keen Sarah Lark and Casey Lloyd loving the conditions. Well done to all the girls!
The under 12 divisions of boys and girls were keenly contested. Both divisions fielding two very competitive heats and excellent standard of finals. Well done to all those competitors on making your respective finals.
Under 12 girls saw the Zali Cargill and Annie Buntine take out their respective heats. However, Annie was to maintain her form and take out the division. Great job! With Lilly Strauss and Claire Bounds coming a very close second and third. Great to seee the Under 12 girls becoming such a competitive division. Well done to all the girls.
The under 12 Boys is a very keenly contested division. The surfing ability of all the groms in this division is very high making it excellent to watch. Lachie Brearley and Ned Shannon took out their respective heats surfing well. The final saw an excellent level of surfing from all competitors. Lachie Brearley and Nick Ford were hot on his tail but unable to beat Gully Steelhead.
In the history of supergroms we had our first score of 10 (highest possible score given for a wave ridden) ever given. Our Under 12 Boys division winner Gulliver Steelhead really strut his stuff on the crunchies stage to get the perfect score. Awesome Gully!
Under 14 Girls and Boys were too keenly contested. Alex Wake and Saasha-Belle Whitworth both surfed competitively with Alex just taking out the division.
The Under 14 boys were rewarding for waiting many hours with great waves on the last rise of the tide. After surfing the first heat which was taken out by Jack Collings and the second being a walk through. All Under 14 boys went out and surfed a single final. The first three places within a single point of each other. Billy Dumphy took out the division closely followed by Jett Wickes and Liam Wolters. Well done to all grommies!
The Under 16 Girls saw Crunchie local Bella Ford take advantage of her local knowledge and win the division. Closely followed by Matilda Shannon and Kerrie O’James. Great surfing by all.
Under 16 Boys were rewarded for their long wait with good consistent surf. Zane Cargill ripped his way into first place by a whisker. Baden Croft, Joe Schofield and Hayden Richardson well and truly in the hunt for first place.
Overall a great way to start the season
All our thanks go to all the parents who gave up most of their Sunday to bring their keen grommies down.
A huge thanks to all the kids for doing their personal best, lapping up the conditions and ripping up the waves.
A truly massive thanks goes to all the parents whom helped and assisted extensively on the day. We appreciate everyone’s assistance, as the day cannot successfully run without your input. Whether out in the water or on the beach it is all-fantastic.
Particular thanks to Claire Easton for membership collection, Skip Easton for his water assistance and head judging, Jeremy, Luke and Mick Franklin for cooking the BBQ all day despite his children sporting broken arms and not being able to compete, Ant Brearley for timing, flagging and judging, Mark Harrison for his water support, Christian Clarke and Darren Minchin for judging most of the day, Sarah and Al Bounds for water support and over seeing the judging and heat running, Drew Shannon for his extensive judging, Andrew Strauss for helping proof read my contest draw!
Also Thank you to Phil Trigger and his photographic documentation of this event and Paul Trigger for his judging and water assistance.
Looking forward to our next contest on Sunday 7th November. To all our new members welcome to Supergroms. We hoped you all enjoyed the day as much as I did.
