Gunnamatta Receives Death Sentance

Media Release (Friday, 26 August 2005)

Today the John Thwaites controlled EPA refused to enforce the existing works approval that would have seen the Eastern Treatment Plant upgraded to produce Class A water.

According to Clean Ocean Foundation President, Peter Smith, 'the announcement has ensured Gunnamtta will remain 's most polluted beach for at least another 10 years';

"Over the past 30 years the once pristine Gunnamtta beach has been reduced into a toxic wasteland by the daily dumping of 450 millions litres of (secondary class c) waste water on the shoreline."

"The EPA's decision to delay the upgrade condones the state sanctioned environmental vandalism that has plagued Gunnamtta Beach since 1975". Smith continued.

"This delay ensures Gunnamtta will continue to be a designated toxic mixing zone where the protection of beneficial users cannot be guaranteed"

"Mr Thwaites wouldn't let his family swim in an area where their health would be at risk so why is it acceptable for the rest of the community".

"Clean Ocean Foundation has made it a priority to enforce the existing beach ban on the minister over the coming summer months"

"It's a sad day for Victorian Beach users when Thwaites, who claims surfing is one of his main interests, can be responsible for this outrageous decision" Smith said "John Thwaites must change his ways or face removal at the next state election" According to Flinders MP and Parliamentary Secretary for the environment Greg Hunt:

"The decision taken by the EPA is disappointing in that it releases Melbourne Water from its obligation to immediately upgrade the treatment plant." Hunt said "No matter what solution is undertaken in relation to the re-use of water, every solution must involve a minimum of tertiary treatment and that process must not be delayed any further." Hunt continued.

Mr Smith apologised to members of the Foundation for its failure in its fight to close the outfall.

Smith said the next step would be investigating legal options and that the Foundation would consider running a 'blue ticket' Thwaites seat at next years state election;

"Thwaites decision seriously questions the independence of the EPA and their ability to protect our environment.

Victoria is becoming the worst polluter of all the states. We are as angry as hell and plan to turn up the heat in our lobbying efforts this coming summer." Smith Concluded.
