Surftag Finals

PSC Go Hard in Sydney

Australia's top sixteen boardriders clubs piled into Sydney on the weekend of 12th-14th December for the Jim Beam Surftag national final, held at Curl Curl. Amongst them were a bunch of PSC's finest surfers, joined by a crew of enthusiastic supporters, drink-carriers and general rabble-rousers.

We left Melbourne early on a beautiful summer's day with a new swell predicted for the weekend and landed in Sydney to find clouds, thunderstorms and weak 1-2' waves. While the team headed off for a practice surf at Whale Beach, the rest of the mob devoted the day to familiarising themselves with the accommodation - the Steyne Hotel - and their fine selection of refreshing beverages.

The day of the contest dawned bright and sunny, unlike most of us. Nursing hangovers we dragged ourselves to Curl Curl, hindered only by the fact that one crook unit by the name of Homer had managed to lose the keys to the car that contained the club tent and assorted other gear. We eventually arrived to find all the other clubs set up with the first heat underway.

The surf was still tiny. Our boys had a good dig at it, but just didn't get the waves we needed. The local crew were all over it, and we bombed out in our first heat. Unfazed, we eventually got set up with a new tent and a keg and got stuck into it, watching North Steyne take the final out. A disappointing result for us, but a good contest and great day at the beach.

The Jim Beam crew put on a blinder of a party that night to round things off nicely. Special mention must go to Craig "Jackass" Watson, whose antics provided a few topics for discussion at the next contest. Thanks to Ronnie and Pecka for organising the trip, and here's looking forward to next year.
